Out with the Old and in with the New in New York and New Orleans

Welcome to 2012!

Wow man, when I arrived in this country there were still two consecutive zeros in the middle of the year. Now it's the third Christmas and New Year behind me. Crazy

The past two weeks have been an express train that came to a stuttering stop the day before work started again. No time to stop and think, just bulldoze on, take it all in, smash it in the face and hope that it all makes sense at the end. And luckily it still does!

It all started with the Greek arriving for a two-we...

As the Saints go marching in...
The Saints won the Superbowl!
Who dat sayin they gonna beat them Saints!?! Who dat! Who dat!

For all my South African friends, this is an unbelievable achievement. It's kind of like Eastern Province winning the Currie Cup, like the Cheetahs winning the Super 14. It's just not supposed to happen. The big difference though, is the the Saints are 'America's Team', having taken the mantle of most-loved team from the Dallas Cowboys. This has almost everything to do w...

Mine's bigger than yours

For those of you who remember that classic BMW advert back in the day with the Beamer busting turns around Chapman’s Peak with the tagline, “it beats the bends (Benz)”, advertising here is almost exclusively like that.

Companies hardly ever focus on their own product or service, preferring instead to engage in some old-school trash-talking. And it’s no holds barred.

Sometimes it’s a radio ad like this:

Guy 1: “Hey wait, what’s that on your desk?”

Guy 2: “It’s a McDon...

Football Fever

Posted by Andrew on Monday, January 18, 2010, In : Happenings
This weekend was the Divisional Playoffs in the NFL. Basically like quarter-finals for the Super Bowl on February 7. And basically a marathon of football.

But first...

The past week leading up to this weekend was awesome. All the new rotationals started during the week and we ran a training course for them over 2 days. Was amazing to be back in the classroom again! Loved it, missed it, jammed it - lots of fun. So did plenty of social things during the week for everybody to meet each other and c...

Central Park stride

Winter officially has New York in it's grip.

Yesterday, I was standing in my kitchen, making a sandwich, when I looked up and saw a few white specks floating in the air. I remember clearly saying out loud, to no one but myself, "what the f@#k?", running to the balcony and confirming for myself that they were indeed the first few flakes of winter snow. So cool! It snowed for about 3 or 4 hours, leaving a fine white blanket on the floor.

It was all gone by the next morning, as I woke up to clea...

Who dat in the Big Easy

Posted by Andrew on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, In : Road Trips

On a spur of the moment whim I booked myself a flight down to Houston, Texas for a weekend with my old buddy Steve Beukman. The man has been living in Houston for two years and has embraced the Texan culture with open arms. Nice hands in fact. Nice hands Larry!

He picked me up at Houston International Airport on Friday evening en route to the liquor store to stock up for his farewell party that night. Steve is headed back to Joburg to make his mark again back home. It was an emotional time for...
