New Music

October 16, 2011
Finally!

I've updated the music page of this blog. A backlog that went all the way back to Bonnaroo. A backlog that included some of the sickest bands I may ever see. The backlog of all backlogs.

Unclogged.

And blogged.

As the year draws to a close I propose a list of the breakout bands of 2011 in my world (they may have been around for longer):

  • The Naked and Famous
  • Noah and the Whale
  • Rural Alberta Advantage
  • Awolnation
I've seen all of these bands live except for Awolnation which I'll be seeing in mid-November. And then... there is the not-so-small matter of Brooklyn's very own The National performing in December. I'm so freakin stoked to see these guys that I'm probably going to go watch them twice in the same week. What what?

Check out the updated list of live bands I've been lucky enough to see here - where music is what feelings sound like...

So Wrong About You

September 8, 2011

It's been just over a month since I found out what she did. Sadness gave way to anger, which gave way to bitterness, which now mixes with profound dissappointment. Disappointed with someone I thought I knew. Disappointed with someone I trusted.

Betrayal. It's one of the worst kinds of pain to suffer because it comes from someone you trusted. There can be any number of motives for it - discontent, boredom, cowardness, immaturity - and usually a combination of many of them. But whatever the mot...

I have a dream sculpture

August 11, 2011
Washington DC is about to get another piece of brand-spanking new history.

In 12 days time, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial will be opened to the public.

It's interesting in that the memorial was proposed by some fraternity brothers back in 1984. Groundbreaking only occured five years ago, and $120 million was spent on scuplting the more than 9 meter likeness of the civil rights visionary, which will sit between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial, next to the Tidal Ba...

Where To Lay The Blame

August 5, 2011

I want to clarify some of the vitriol from my previous post, to diffuse some of the anger that lies in those words.

When I referred to 'people' throughout that last post I was including myself. I can be a horrid person sometimes. I lie. I've stolen. Perhaps most cruelly, I have used words as weapons and said some things in the heat of the moment that I wish I could take back, that I never really meant, but that came out all the same. All these things affect other people in horrible ways.

And t...

People Taking Turns To Be Horrible People

August 3, 2011
Why does it feel sometimes like everybody is taking turns being horrible people to each other?

This world works on the premise that we are all good people inherently, and we're in this together.

But for some reason we keep fucking it up for each other by being intrinsically horrible to another person.

This is particularly true when it comes to feelings. Unfortunately I've observed, and been on the receiving end, of too many people treating the feelings of another with selfish contempt. I under...

May Day of Judgement

May 17, 2011
Has anyone back home in SA heard anything about this so-called Judgement Day happening in May?

21st of May to be exact.

Apparently it is going to start with horrendous earthquakes in New Zealand and Fiji that will open graves and present the dead (and those that will die in the devastation) for their day of reckoning. This will last until October 21st when God himself will strike down upon the earth with great vengeance and furious anger and destroy any remaining survivors. (Nod to Pulp Fictio...

It comes full circle

May 11, 2011
Well here I am again. Right back where I was in the begninning.

300 Brae Boulevard, Park Ridge. The Marriot Hotel.

It's so weird to be back here. It still smells the same. That smell reminding me of new experiences, nervous energy, nightly turn-downs, lonely contemplation, morning workouts and a wistful pining for a girl back home.

It's amazing how much things have changed, my life now established at work, surrounded by friends, living in the bustling city, happily thinking of a girl in that c...

Fog machines and laser beams

January 13, 2011
Wow, the day after that last post all hell broke loose for Dipps and me.

It started with him arriving back at 4am to the Hoboken flat from South America.

It started for me a mere 4 hours later as I headed off to pick up what turned out to be a 15 foot truck in New York City to haul all our stuff across (or under rather) the Hudson River.

It was moving day. And it was gnarly.

I remember getting into the truck in the Budget yard at 9am or whatever it was and taking a deep breath. You can do this...

 Video Vibe for the Moment

From the movie Drive

Whose site is it anyway?

Andrew Barry Some people call me the Earthman. Some people call me Baz. Some people call me Barry or Bar. And some people also like jazz. I think most of the people surfing this site know who I am. If not - read on, my friend...
