A few weeks ago The Greek, The Daffs, Karatjie and I headed up to Marsha's Little House By The Sea in a state which is not an island, called Rhode Island.

About a three hour drive from New York, this place is absolutely gorgeous. Reminded me a lot of a place like Paternoster, where I have spent many a good time with Bernie and the crew.

With the weather stunning, this was the ideal little slice of utopian escape from the Mad City. The days were spent eating breakfast like champions, sitting on...

This Time For Africa ~ Part V

Posted by Andrew on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, In : World Cup 2010

My superb hosts Attie and Athens picked me up at Park Station after a seriously delayed bus ride back from Zululand. My final weekend was about to begin. A weekend of frank conversations, flirtations and rambunctious situations, punctuated by two notable occupations - a band's last stand on Louis Botha Avenue and a football match between two nations for the right to be called World Champions.

On to the first one, on to the first one....

So after the ignominy of watching the Springboks get blow...

This Time For Africa ~ Part IV

Posted by Andrew on Saturday, August 14, 2010, In : World Cup 2010

Back in Jozi now, I stayed with good friends Marc and Gina, otherwise known (to me) as Attie and Athens. They had just recently purchased a house in the suburb of Parkwood and had already made an addition to their family in the form of a highly energetic, won't-take-no-for-an-answer puppy called Layla. Cute little Golden Retriever Layla. Wow, soon to become a close and intimate friend over the course of my 10 days with Attie and Athens.

On quarter-final day, we all went to Melrose Square for a...

This Time For Africa ~ Part III

Posted by Andrew on Saturday, August 14, 2010, In : World Cup 2010

In another of the series of serendipitous scenes on this roadtrip, I happened to bump into a friend of mine, Lanie, outside my old work where I stopped by for a visit. While it is tempting to call him me Laanie it really doesn't fit.

What was so serendipitous about the meeting was that Lanie and his girlfriend were heading to Pretoria for the next Spain game, my second game of the tournament.

So when the time came I joined Lanie and Hannah for a trip up the newly-expanded N1 to Pretoria. At on...

Batman and Robin

That has to be the most eventful run I've had here in Hoboken. My route along the Hudson River takes in some interesting characters, not to mention a breathtaking view of Manhattan, which only exacerbates the feeling of the lung-bursting speeds at which I run.

But today was bizarre.

First, as I exit my building onto the street across from the W Hotel, I notice a commotion. As I curiously venture forward I realise that the Brazilian football team are staying there. They play the USA in a frien...

This Time For Africa ~ Part II

Posted by Andrew on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, In : World Cup 2010

As Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros sung "Home, let me come hooooome", so I set off from JFK International Airport on an arduous journey to the centre of the world's attention at the time - Johannesburg, South Africa.

I nearly didn't board the plane though. No, it wasn't because of my inexplicable inability to 'get' this whole aviation thing. Not this time. It was because of the elaborate flight plan the internet search-for-the-cheap-shit engines had mapped out for me. You see, I was due ...

Whose site is it anyway?

Andrew Barry Some people call me the Earthman. Some people call me Baz. Some people call me Barry or Bar. And some people also like jazz. I think most of the people surfing this site know who I am. If not - read on, my friend...
