Roadtrippin' Tennessee: An Adventure in 3 Acts

Posted by Andrew on Monday, November 30, 2009, In : Road Trips

I'm getting addicted to this road-tripping thing. Flights are relatively cheap, the country is massive, and the time is now. So this is the story of Road Trip No. 2... which followed the route above through America's South (right to left).

Act I

Last weekend was so good I decided to do it all again. Booked flights to Nashville, Tennessee to meet up with Steve and another buddy of his, Julius. J-Flip from the Phillipines.

My trip there started at 2am on Thanksgiving morning. Monster of a mi...

Who dat in the Big Easy

Posted by Andrew on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, In : Road Trips

On a spur of the moment whim I booked myself a flight down to Houston, Texas for a weekend with my old buddy Steve Beukman. The man has been living in Houston for two years and has embraced the Texan culture with open arms. Nice hands in fact. Nice hands Larry!

He picked me up at Houston International Airport on Friday evening en route to the liquor store to stock up for his farewell party that night. Steve is headed back to Joburg to make his mark again back home. It was an emotional time for...

Little boxes

I've moved into my new apartment in Hoboken - finally.

One word comes to mind to describe this feeling... GLORY.

It feels so good to have a place of my own. My space. My apartment. My castle.... ok, not exactly a castle. But it sure as hell feels like it!

One of the cool things about buying furniture for a new place here in the States is a not-so-little store that goes by the Swedish name IKEA. It is quite simply magic. The place is insane. I have spent what feels like much of my recent adult l...

Keeping it real

Posted by Andrew on Friday, November 13, 2009, In : Ramblings
I promised myself when I started this blog to keep things real. To give an honest account of my experience here. And that's what this post is all about.

I realised this past week that moving countries, uprooting everything and settling some place new, is no easy ride. Things became daunting, confusing, and hectic these past few days. And what I've experienced is, that's when loneliness sets in. You start missing what you left behind - your family, your friends, the people you love. And your ho...

Into nature

Posted by Andrew on Monday, November 9, 2009, In : Happenings
Had an afternoon to kill today after another big night in the city last night. So I Googled the nearest attractions to the hotel and found a place called Tallman Mountain, only a 20min drive away. And so I set forth...

What a beautiful place. It's in a state park on the Hudson River, north of New York. The sun was glowing bright in the chilly sky, basking the autumn floor of the hilltop forest in warm light. It was really still all around me, but for the rhythm of the birds and crickets, and t...

Midtown meander

Posted by Andrew on Friday, November 6, 2009, In : Happenings
I did New York by day today. Well, a small part of New York at least.

It was actually a day of mixed emotions. My initial reason for venturing into the jungle was to appear at the Canadian Consulate to apply for my visa. My development team is going to Toronto next week, and thanks to some shithead thieves in South Africa, I am travelling on a temporary passport - one which is not accepted by the Canadians for issuing visas. It took me a $65 application fee and two hours of waiting to find th...

Raise your goblet of rock

Posted by Andrew on Friday, November 6, 2009, In : Ramblings
I think it is time now. These guys deserve big 'props'. I'd like you all to join me in raising your goblet of rock to the best rock radio station in the world, ever!

I'm talking about New York's Rock Experience, "wonohwonyne". Officially known as 101.9 RXP. These guys do nothing but rock...

all...

day...

long.

The reason today is the today is because I spent most of it in the city - and sat in a ridonkulous amount of traffic to get there and back. But these guys saved me. Literally. Moshing har...

Halloween madness

Posted by Andrew on Monday, November 2, 2009, In : Happenings
Americans go absolutely crazy for this holiday - literally every radio station and TV channel has Halloween fever and people here get so excited, like it's the best day ever. So naturally, I had to get involved...

My involvement started earlier this week when two of the girls at work invited me to go costume shopping with them. I realised quickly that I needed to get a decent costume to avoid looking like a chop, so I went along with them.

I couldn't believe the size of the store! It was a mas...

Andrew Barry Some people call me the Earthman. Some people call me Baz. Some people call me Barry or Bar. And some people also like jazz. I think most of the people surfing this site know who I am. If not - read on, my friend...
